The quikpro 2013 at Kirra..
SO… First credit to where credit is due, Congrats to Kelly Slater. To win a single contest at that level is a achievement in itself let alone the squillions he has won… .. That being said, I would love to see the surfing do the talking and the surfers win by surfing, not tactics. I know its a big part in the game and most of them would have done the same thing but out there in those conditions it was bullshit that priority ruling. They were surfing completely different banks. If they were on the same bank surfing from the same take off spot then, ok, maybe…. Priority on a long right racing point?!??!? I am not sure! But Joel was surfing one spot and Kelly the other as he had done rightly so in his semi against Mick. THEN on THAT one wave and it was the wave Joel had been waiting for all heat at the exact spot he was trying to be all heat, to have it finish the way it did is a massive disappointment! I Know it is Parko’s home and I know that loads of people were there supporting the new world champ but the eerie seedlessness after that priority ruling when Kelly was taken back up the point on the jetski and the beach announcer called for a cheer for him and to a person, (and it was busy) no-body said a thing, was some how fitting. I even heard some booing. Now, my KS11 lovers will say that didn’t happen and lots of other stuff about this post but it did and that is the truth of it.
In the semi’s Kelly snuck in front of Mick with a 10 at the end to seal a spot in the final and Joel demolished Michel to set up Quik’s dream final at a destination we all want brought back to its former glory. There were some waves out there that were incredible but not a thing like what it was.
Finally, it was a great contest, in a great location with the right calls being made (except Taj’s) and a clear indication of whom to watch out for this year.
Here are my photos and just a question…. Who do you think was on the cleanest, more perfect waves?
